When Tier Promotions Are Appropriate

Tier promotions are a powerful and highly visible action — they should be used sparingly and with clear justification:

Appropriate UseExample
Founding ecosystem partnersA publisher who was a key design partner before the marketplace launched — they have marketplace impact that predates the tracking system
Strategic partner recognitionA publisher entering a formal strategic partnership where Gold or Platinum tier is part of the partnership agreement
Retroactive correctionA publisher whose historical points were lost due to a system migration or data loss event that cannot be individually reconstructed
Tier-skip for exceptional contributionA publisher at the top of Silver who made a major ecosystem contribution deserving Platinum recognition immediately, without waiting for the point accumulation

How Tier Promotion Works

1
Search for the publisher — In Rewards Management, find the publisher. The publisher's current tier and lifetime point total are displayed prominently for context.
2
Click "Promote Tier" — Opens the tier promotion form.
3
Select target tier — Choose Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum. The current tier is grayed out. You can skip tiers (e.g., Bronze → Platinum directly).
4
Enter promotion reason — Required, minimum 50 characters. All tier promotions require an extended justification because of their significance.
5
Dual-admin confirmation — All tier promotions, regardless of tier level, require a second admin to confirm before the promotion takes effect. This prevents unilateral tier manipulation.
6
Promotion applied — After the second admin confirms, the publisher's tier is updated immediately. Their lifetime point total does not change — the tier is set independently as an override.

Tier Promotion vs Point Award

Tier PromotionPoint Award
Changes tier?Yes — directly sets tier to target levelOnly if points push lifetime total past threshold
Changes point total? No — point totals are unchangedYes — adds to lifetime and weighted score
Affects leaderboard? No — weighted score unchangedYes — weighted score increases
Approval required?Always — dual-admin for all promotionsOnly for awards over 500 pts
Publisher notified?Yes — email and in-platform notificationYes — email and in-platform notification
Tier promotions are not reversed automatically

Once a tier promotion is applied, the publisher holds that tier permanently — the same no-downgrade rule that applies to normally earned tiers applies to promoted tiers. If a tier promotion was issued in error, it can only be corrected by a downgrade action (a separate, also dual-admin-approved action). Downgrades are extremely rare and should not be needed if tier promotions are used appropriately.
